GRAB BAG: SPANISH REDS

Davis Home  and Beard Home •  Arlington, VA
March 16th  •  7:30 p.m.

Due to the white stuff, not white wine, the January Grab Bag was postponed to March 16th.  Master Scribe Russ and Gentle Lady Nancy Davis will open their beautiful home for this occasion.  Everyone attending is expected to bring one bottle of Spanish Red wine and a favorite hors d'oeuvre.  If you have something buried in you cellar, all the better.  No Walter, Port is from Portugal, not Spain, so it does not qualify!  But, Carl, Sherry does!  Those who do not bring a wine and a dish will be asked to contribute to the event. It will be up to the Master Commander to determine what constitutes a dish!

Starting in 1521, the Spanish colonialists in Mexico began a thriving wine industry that spread to South America and California using Spanish, not French, vines.  It may be interesting to see if any wines are available today from South America made from the old, traditional Spanish grapes.  Mission wines from California probably also qualify, but do we really wish to have them? No doubt we will enjoy a variety of wines and styles that will make this event a diverse tasting pleasure.  Of course, we will enjoy informal commentary on the wines by none other than the highly informed and informative Dave Barber and anyone else who wishes to share their knowledge.

So that they may plan accordingly, if you plan to attend please notify Russ or Nancy Davis by email at russ@russdavis.net or call 703-527-7850.

CELEBRATE THE CLOSING HUNT
Lenah Farm  •  Lenah, VA
April 2nd  •   10:00 a.m.

What a better way to welcome spring than a delightful morning than watching the hunt in the hunt country of Virginia?  We will be guests of the Fairfax Hunt Club as it holds its closing hunt on Saturday morning, April 2nd, at Lenah Farm in Lenah, VA.  This elegant event can start delightful day.  The ceremonies will start with the presentation of the stirrup cup at 10:15 a.m.  The hunt starts promptly at 10:30 a.m. and is over at 11 a.m.  We will enjoy a glass of bubbly as we watch the festivities.  The British House of Lords, no doubt, now envies the Colonies.  Virginia continues the ceremony and glory of the hunt; Britain has banned it.

For after the hunt, Master d΄Elégance Debra Arthur is planning an appropriate brunch at one of the fine establishments in the area.  After brunch, each can partake in the delights of the Virginia Hunt Country to possibly include visiting one or two of the fine wineries in the area.  Details about the brunch and costs will be in the next newsletter.

OTHER NEWS

2005 Dues.  The dreaded dues notices are going out again.  Please remit early because the “kick-back” our chapter gets each April is based upon early payment of dues.

Schedule for 2005.  Our new schedule may be found on our web site's events page.

Snail Mail vs. Email.  By the next mailing or two, to the maximum extent possible, we will convert from snail mail to email.  This should save the organization several hundred dollars in mailing costs as well as significant effort in stuffing envelopes.  To coordinate this, I first send newsletters by email then by snail mail.  If I do not have your email address, and you have one, please let me know.  By April, I will send newsletters primarily by email and only to those for whom I have no email address or cannot open these missives, by snail mail.
